A structure is used to keep our goals in the front of our mind.

  • Like a post-it note on your computer screen, this note to self can be anything from “Take out the garbage,” to “Be more patient with self.”

Seeing the note triggers the decision to have written it in the first place. It motivates you to follow through as long as it doesn’t become like wallpaper you’ve looked at so long you don’t recall the meaning behind the message.

  • A picture on your refrigerator door of how you want to look or be (in your attitude) can be a reminder to make choices that lead to this end.

Strategically placing these photos and notes where you will see them when you most want to be reminded helps you be successful.

  • Toys/fidgets on your desk. Adults need toys as much as children do. They help with keeping our hands busy when our mind is processing. Squeeze balls help relieve tension. Crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles are an escape from whatever you may be over thinking.

What will help you remember to take time to be playful and lighten up? What would it do for you to have a couple of other playful, colorful items within your reach?

  • Mementos from your last trip, like a stone or a souvenir, help to feel the way you did in the moment of finding the treasure. Pulling up those past, pleasant, feelings cause a happy feeling within. They also become conversational pieces from which to share great stories with those who see them. Best of all, they too, are motivational in causing us to plan the next great escape!

Think about what you most need and want in your life right now. What kind of structure will help remind you to strive to get that need met? Make these items purposeful! When they have done their job, replace them with something else.
